Sonam Kapoor Pregnant With Second Child: Experts Share Why More Women Are Choosing Motherhood Later

Sonam Kapoor ahead of reports confirming her second baby.

Sonam Kapoor is reportedly expecting her second child at 40. This news has sparked a larger conversation beyond Bollywood. Why are more women choosing motherhood in their late 30s and early 40s? Doctors say this shift isn’t a trend. It reflects how women’s lives, careers, health priorities, and medical options have evolved over the last decade.

Gynaecologists point out that late pregnancies are no longer automatically considered “high-risk” the way they once were. Women today are healthier at 35 or 40 than previous generations were at 25. This is due to better diagnostics and regular screenings. Improved prenatal care and lifestyle awareness also contribute. “A woman’s age is just one factor now,” says Dr Ritu Singh, a Delhi-based obstetrician. “Overall health, fitness, hormonal balance, and early monitoring matter far more.”

Experts also add that women are taking charge of when to become mothers, due to education and financial independence. Career focus and conscious planning also influence this decision. Many couples are waiting until they feel emotionally stable, financially secure and ready for a long-term commitment to parenting. Fertility options like IVF, embryo freezing and improved hormonal therapies have also opened doors for women who wish to start families later without feeling rushed by a biological clock.

Doctors note that the biggest myths around late pregnancies—such as guaranteed complications, infertility or difficult deliveries—are outdated. “We’re seeing smooth pregnancies at 38, 40, even 42,” says Dr Meera S. “Regular check-ups, folic acid, balanced diet, controlled weight, and early scans can ensure a perfectly safe journey.”

Celebrities becoming mothers later in life—like Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Lisa Ray and Neha Dhupia—have also played a role in normalising late motherhood. Their experiences have shown that having children later is possible. This visibility has opened the door for a more honest conversation around fertility, reproductive choices and the emotional side of family planning.

As Sonam’s fans celebrate the happy news, doctors hope this moment becomes an opportunity for women to understand that later-in-life pregnancy is not something to fear, but something to approach with informed choices. With today’s medical support, late motherhood is increasingly becoming a safe, intentional, and empowered decision.
