PM Modi Begins 3-Day South Africa Visit for G20 Summit

PM Narendra Modi waves as he departs for his 3-day visit to South Africa for the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-day visit to South Africa to participate in the G20 Summit, calling it a “particularly special” edition of the global gathering. India, which held the G20 Presidency last year, is expected to play an important role in shaping conversations on global growth, development financing, and cooperation among emerging economies.

Modi is scheduled to attend key sessions alongside world leaders, with a strong focus on inclusive development, digital public infrastructure, climate financing, and reforming global institutions. Officials say India will emphasise its priorities—strengthening Global South representation, expanding energy partnerships, and pushing for resilient supply chains.

Ahead of his departure, Modi said the summit offers an opportunity to deepen ties with South Africa, a strategic partner in areas including defence, trade, health, and technology. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from Africa, Europe, and Asia, underscoring India’s widening global engagement.

South Africa, which currently holds the G20 Presidency, is hosting the summit under the theme “People, Peace, Prosperity, and Planet.” Key discussions will focus on economic recovery, fair energy transitions, and strengthening multilateral institutions. They will also ensure equitable access to global resources.

The visit marks Modi’s continued diplomatic outreach, following high-level meetings earlier this year. Officials say India’s participation will reaffirm its commitment to bridging divides between advanced and developing economies. This has been a priority New Delhi has championed over the past two years.

Modi’s engagements will include plenary sessions, leaders’ dialogues, and cultural interactions. There may also be potential announcements on new collaborative initiatives in the Global South. The visit is expected to reinforce India’s role as a key voice in international forums. This comes at a time of shifting geopolitical and economic realities.
